Subliminal is an Albuquerque, NM based indie game studio that makes wholesome games that are compassionate, cute, and diverse. Subliminal is currently working on Button City, a colorful low poly narrative adventure about friendship and community. The original concept was developed by the studio’s co-founder and art director Shandiin Yazzie Woodward. She is an indigenous (Diné) artist and the creator of Subliminal’s unique and colorful style. Subliminal is indigenous owned and advocates for uplifting marginalized voices and diversity in games.
History
Early history
Subliminal was founded in 2012 by married couple Shandiin Yazzie Woodward and Ryan Woodward, in Albuquerque, NM. They wanted to create video games and grow the games industry in their home state, so they started a studio to work on small projects. Subliminal would go on to create colorful and vibrant games with quirky mechanics. They released their first game Sky Pets in 2015 for mobile. After Sky Pets they began work on Button City and transitioned into a full-time development studio in 2019. The Subliminal team has grown and now works across multiple states and are currently working on their upcoming release of Button City.
Sky Pets
Sky Pets was their first game released as a studio. They wanted to create a game that fit for mobile that would be cute, challenging, and have cats. Sky Pets would task players to guide their custom made pets to fall hazardous skies to reach fallen stars. Sky Pets was released in October 2015 for iOS and Android and went on to the ImagineNATIVE 2015 award for Best Digital Media Work.
Button City
Button City is a colorful low poly narrative adventure game about a fox and his friends banding together to save their local arcade! Explore a diorama world, play exciting arcade games, complete quirky quests and meet cute animal friends. Button City is Subliminal’s second game, they started the project in 2017 and the game is currently in development.
